How would you feel if your kid says that he will love you, show respect to you, take care of you, and listen to you ONLY when you start earning twice as much money as you do now?
Most probably, you will not like it, feel bad about it and think of it as a very silly decision/criteria, won’t you? And you may even explain to him that we should take care of our loved ones, give attention to them, support them, respect them and listen to them regardless of how much money they make because relationships should not be driven by or based on some numbers. Right?
If that’s the case, then why do we as parents do the same to our kids? Why do we love them more, give them more attention, and praise them when they get good numbers in their exams, and often treat them in a very inappropriate manner if it happens otherwise? What does such behavior do to our child’s psychology? Should we really make them feel like a failure if they don’t meet our expectations?
